Handmade Paper
Banana Paper (Mash) – Thailand
This acid-free Banana Paper Kozo paper base contains heavy banana bark and leaf inclusions. These banana papers are a beautiful and durable addition to your paper and craft collection. They are also an environmentally-conscious paper. Banana trees produce fruit only once a year and are then cut down, leaving abundant waste or by-product. Recycling the fibres from this by-product, into paper, helps to prevent the ecosystem’s rivers and forests from becoming polluted with waste.

Huun Bianco – Yucatan Mexico (Handmade Mayan Papers)
Huun - the Mayan word for paper, is also the tree that has been used in paper-making for hundreds of years. This ancient practice in the Yucatan was completely lost until 1985, when Project Huun for sustainable community development was initiated. Today, this paper is made by Maya-Yucatec artisans who combine Washi techniques with the ancient techniques of the Mayans. Huun paper is 100% alfa-cellulose, made from selected plant fibres such as Sanseviera (Mother-in-law's Tongue) and Cattail. Both are renewable, their use does no damage to the environment.

Khadi Rag Paper – India
From a handmade paper mill outside the village of Tarihal near Hubli, in Karnataka, South India. Hubli has the biggest open air cotton market in Asia, which is the raw material of the Khadi papers. The mill directly employs over 50 men and women from local villages and indirectly provides work for bookbinders, printers, envelope makers, and the carpenter Irrappa, who makes their moulds and deckles. It is also an organic farm, irrigated by run-off water from the paper mill.
Khadi rag papers are made from 100% cotton rag, which have longer fibers than linters that are generally used in papermaking. These genuine rag papers are known for their exceptional strength and durability. The cotton rag comes from T-shirt cuttings, a reliable source of pure woven cotton.
Rags are pulped in a Hollandar beater. Neutral pH internal sizing is added at this stage. They are the only genuinely acid free handmade rag papers in India. After drying, sheets are tub sized (surface sized) with gelatine, which produces a hard, water resistant surface. This is the traditional way of sizing paper for water colour, allowing water colour to be worked over the surface without penetrating the paper. They can be used with all painting and drawing media. For painting in oils, they should be primed with gesso or acrylic primer.
None of the papers are made from wood pulp and there is no negative impact on India's forest resources. No chlorine, bleaches, or harmful chemicals are used in any of the papers.

Papyrus – Egypt
The word papyrus refers both to the writing surface invented by the ancient Egyptians, and the plant used to make this material. Papyrus continued to be used until the eleventh century A.D. even as paper, invented in China, became the most popular writing material for the Arab world around the eighth century A.D. With minor variations, the papyrus roll was produced in essentially the same way throughout its approximately 4,000-year history.
